What's the Horticulture - Landscaping (Soft and Hard) course about?
Studied over two days per week, this qualification provides an introduction to garden maintenance and horticulture in general and is appropriate for learners from a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. The very practical nature of the course builds confidence as well as basic soft and hard landscaping skills. This qualification consists almost entirely of practical units covering a range of horticultural and construction tasks.
The course covers the following:
- Preparing, laying and maintaining paved areas
- Preparing, constructing and maintaining wooden structures
- Preparing, constructing and maintaining simple brick walls
- Basic soil science
- Propagating by seed sowing
- Maintaining lawns
- Preparing, planting and maintaining beds and borders
- Identifying a range of plants
The course is assessed through practical observation, written and verbal questions.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of this course students may wish to progress to a full time course in either the land based or construction departments.
What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you must be able to work outdoors and be able to handle plant material, mortar, bricks and paving slabs.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Horticulture - Landscaping (Soft and Hard) course?
Students will be awarded the NPTC Level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills.
