What's the German course about?

The course builds on what you have studied at GCSE and develops your skills in using German, as well as giving you an insight into German speaking cultures and societies. The syllabus is based on contemporary topics which you will find useful for work, higher education and for personal use.

The AS Level will give you a solid grounding in the language skills and knowledge of contemporary society. Listening and speaking play a major role and a lot of work is done around vocabulary building and the acquisition of grammar.

The course covers a variety of topics which includes youth culture and concerns, lifestyle, health and fitness, the world around us, education and employment.

All courses are classroom-based, involving individual, pair and group activities. You can also take advantage of the Internet facilities to access the many websites dedicated to language learning.

Please note, if you're not quite ready for AS Level study, we also offer GCSE and beginner classes in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Call 0800 068 8585 to find out more.

You will be assessed continuously throughout the year and will be required to take the AS Level examinations in May/June.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

When you have successfully completed the AS Level you can progress onto the second year of the A Level course (A2). The A2 Level is a continuation of the AS Level, allowing scope for a variety of approaches to learning and using the chosen language. It encourages learners to develop their linguistic and general study skills to a high level of competence and provides an access route to university.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

You will need to have a GCSE in German at grade B or above, or have experience of speaking German at this level. In the latter case you will need to have an interview to assess your suitability for the course.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the German course?

If you successfully complete the course you will be awarded a GCE AS Level in German by Edexcel. AS is the first half of an A Level, as well as being a stand-alone qualification.
