This course is aimed at individuals who are interested in how computer games are developed and want to gain an understanding of how they can start to write them for themselves using the C++ programming language and Microsoft's DirectX 9.0.
The course covers the following:
- Install and set up Visual C++ Express edition
- Install and set up Direct3D
- Build a basic Windows program and understand the windows message loop
- Basic understanding of COM
- Understand the math tools needed to help write computer games
- Understand the Direct3D object and initialisation
- Understand the need of the rendering pipeline
- Use various Direct3D functions to allow you to rotate objects and draw them
- Use lighting models
- How lo draw terrain using height maps
- How to create a virtual camera for a first person shooter
Assessment is by completion of practical projects within class.
This course will allow you to move onto the more advanced iPhone/iPod Touch Game Development course.
Students wanting to enrol onto this course should have knowledge of C++ programming and a great interest in computer games. Students should also possess good skills in mathematics (basic algebra, vectors, scalars, matrices) although the course will cover the basic maths needed in order to do 3D rendering.
This is a short course and does not lead to a formal qualification.
