What's the Design Craft - Jewellery course about?

The course provides students with strong foundational jewellery manufacturing skills. The course begins with working with metal and then progresses on to working with precious metals or combining metal with other modern materials to produce jewellery in innovative and contemporary formats. Students will also take part in design development classes which cover design principles for the jewellery design field, supporting student progression towards higher education, self-employment or the jewellery industry and allied trades.

The department provides a well equipped jewellery workshop with benches for 18 students. Hand tools and copper are provided but students will need to purchase personal consumables such as emery paper, saw blades and precious metals. Cultural visits include trips to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Liverpool Galleries, Manchester Museums, Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, London Galleries and Exhibitions.

Specialist techniques taught include:
- Etching
- Fly-pressing
- Stone setting
- Forming and forging
- Chasing and répoussé
- Riveting
- Enamelling
- Casting methods

The course is assessed continually throughout the course via the completion of course units and presentation of portfolio work in a diploma exhibition at the end of year two.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Students may progress into higher education, employment in the jewellery trade or allied industries or investigate avenues towards self employment.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants with five GCSEs at grade C or above with clear evidence of creative experience, study or aptitude, are invited to apply.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Design Craft - Jewellery course?

The qualification awarded is the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Design Crafts: Jewellery which is equivalent to one A Level.
