This qualification is offered by Construction Awards Alliance (CAA) - an alliance between City & Guilds and CSkills Awards and is aimed at learners that have an interest in construction and want to pursue a career in bricklaying. It has been designed with the help of employers in the industry, so it offers a structured programme that takes learners through the skills needed to do a job well.
The course covers the following:
- Workplace safety
- Efficient work practices
- Moving and handling resources
- Interpreting work drawings to set out masonry structures
- Thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
- Building solid walling, isolated and attached piers
- Building cavity walling forming masonry structure
The Diploma is assessed on practical assignments, unit end tests and an online exam.
In addition to becoming employed as bricklayers, many students become self-employed or progress towards careers as technicians and supervisors in the building industry. Once students become employed in the construction industry they can go on to study for NVQ Level 2 in Bricklaying.
No formal qualifications are required, but a reasonable proficiency in communication, arithmetic and manual skills is an advantage.
At the end of the programme learners will have achieved the Construction Skills Diploma in Bricklaying at Level 2.
