What's the ATA Light Vehicle - Service Maintenance Technician course about?

Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) is a national voluntary scheme which tests the current competence of individuals working in the retail motor industry.

Six practical assessments cover:
- Braking systems
- Engine electrical systems
- Engine mechanical systems
- Vehicle safety inspections
plus two assessments from:
- Transmission systems
- Vehicle electrical systems
- Wheel alignment and steering

To become an ATA Light Vehicle Service Maintenance Technician, you must pass six practical assessments and an on-line knowledge test comprising 30 questions which must be completed in 45 minutes.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

To ensure that you have kept up-to-date with new technologies, you will have to be re-assessed every five years to maintain your accreditation.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Before you can take an assessment you must be able to prove your experience of working as a light vehicle service maintenance technician for at least two years, or if you already have a recognised level 2 qualification, you will need to show a year's work experience.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the ATA Light Vehicle - Service Maintenance Technician course?

Once you have achieved your accreditation, your details will be entered on the ATA register of accredited technicians.
