What's the Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement course about?

This course not only enables you to gain a valid qualification in assessing, but also to develop a greater understanding of the process and methods of assessment. The Level 3 Award is required for learning and development practitioners who assess in workshop or classroom-based environments using assessment methods, such as simulations, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies, and recognising prior learning.

For students undertaking this course there is an initial one-day training session that will introduce the principles and processes of good assessment practice. You will be allocated a personal development advisor who will discuss your requirements with you and devise a personalised programme to meet those needs. Appointments will be made with your advisor, by mutual agreement, to assist with individual development, and assist in resolving any problems that arise through this process. This is then supported by telephone contact or email with the advisor, who will also contact you at appropriate intervals to confirm your progress. You will receive tutor support for 12 months from the date of induction.

Those new to assessing can take the knowledge unit (unit 1) and gain an understanding of assessment principles and practices before they begin a role. When they are ready to practise they can undertake an additional unit.

Those who need to know about assessment, but never intend to practice, for example managers, are able to learn about essential principles and practices by achieving the knowledge unit (unit 1) only.

Those who are in a position to carry out real assessment as part of their job role can undertake the knowledge unit (unit 1) and applied unit (unit 3) at the same time and use the evidence from unit 1 to support the evidence gathered to meet the requirements of unit 3.

The course covers the following units:
- Unit 1 Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
- Unit 3 Assessing Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding

For unit 1 you will be required to write a statement, demonstrating your understanding of the assessment process which you are implementing. For unit 3 you will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence, proving competence in assessing learners in workshop or classroom-based environments.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Once you have become a qualified assessor with a good level of experience, you may wish to consider becoming a verifier which would entail going on to complete the Edexcel Level 4 Award/Certificate in Assessing and Assuring the Quality of Assessment.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

The Edexcel Level 3 Award is intended for those who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the work environment (eg a workshop, classroom or other training environment), either on a paid or voluntary basis. You must be aged 19 or over, and have a level 3 qualification (or above) and relevant work-related experience in the occupational area in which you plan to assess. You must be in a position where you can generate evidence to meet the requirements of the unit(s). This involves having two learners who are seeking to achieve a work-related qualification deemed equivalent to an NVQ. You must have the support of a qualified assessor and a qualified internal verifier for the qualification you are assessing.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement course?

On successful completion of units 1 and 3, you will receive the Edexcel Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement. You can complete unit 1 on its own, but this does not qualify you to assess learners.
