The Manchester College’s Design Team has been at the centre of activities in the development and the implementation of the college’s accommodation and environmental strategy. It is made up of college staff, consultants, solicitors and partner agencies and is forward thinking in its approach to a sustainable Manchester.
The team has come together to offer its expertise to external clients in a number of key development areas including:
Philip is a chartered surveyor with over 30 years’ post qualification experience in government, education and the private sectors. He has worked for the college for over 10 years, both as a consultant and subsequently as a full-time member of staff. In his current role as director of property Philip has had responsibility for all aspects of estate and asset management planning; developing and implementing accommodation strategies to meet organisational and operational needs; preparing business case models for capital funding applications; and developing and implementing innovative management processes and protocols to enable a continuous improvement to service delivery. For many years now Phil has championed the use of green technologies, delivering and managing an estate that reflects the ever changing needs of the college, its students and staff whilst taking into account environmental considerations.
Ian was originally a lecturer who has worked at the college for over 20 years and has a background in special needs training. His present role overlaps between the college curriculum and the monitoring and continuous improvement of site performance and college standards. Part of that role has been the development of staff and student participation in sustainability via Green Champion groups on each of the college’s campuses. Particular focus has been given to sustainability and Ofsted inspections which will be evidenced with examples of action on raising ‘sustainability’ awareness and actual participation of students/staff in green issues. Ian liaises with various external partner organisations, such as the Association of Colleges and the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges, to pursue the college’s sustainability agenda.
Michelle graduated with a degree in Architecture in 2002 and went back to university part-time to study a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management whilst also working full-time as an assistant project manager. In the past she has worked on hotel fit outs, new build offices, supermarkets and residential apartments. She is currently the project manager for two of the projects currently on site; the new Wythenshawe Campus and the North Manchester Sixth Form College at Harpurhey, as well as the co-location project which is currently in the early design stages. She is also tasked with assisting in the co-ordination of the overall Property Strategy for the college.
Ed is one of the founding Directors of Planit, a landscape led design studio based in south Manchester with over 25 qualified professionals in the field of landscape architecture, urban design and masterplanning. Ed takes an overseeing role on most projects, ensuring that sustainability is at the core of all design solutions, their deliverability, materials specification and life-cycle management. Prior to setting up Planit, Ed spent five years in the horticultural industry specialising in the production of semi-mature trees but also the conception and development of load bearing soils for tree planting under hard surfaces. As part of this research a number of waste products from industry sectors were tested and are now commercially available for the amelioration of manufactured soils. Planit is currently working for The Manchester College on the Fielden and Wythenshawe Campuses and co-authored the sustainability vision document: - “A Sustainable Vision Across the City for The Manchester College” with Walker Simpson Architects.
