Sue Murphy

Sue Murphy

Biography

Sue Murphy is chair of The Manchester College's Governing Body.

Sue was elected to Manchester City Council in 1995 as a Labour and Cooperative Party Councillor, representing Brooklands in Wythenshawe. She has been the

  • executive member for employment and skills since 2007, which includes responsibility for economic development, enterprise and services to young people
  • lead on women’s issues since 1997 and has always given particular priority to women experiencing domestic abuse and those involved in prostitution
  • executive (cabinet) member for direct services (street cleaning, catering, refuse collection) from 1998 to 2003
  • executive member for finance and human resources from 2003 to 2007

Sue is a school governor at Sandilands Primary School.

Her previous jobs include working for a newspaper in the advertising department and working for a member of the European Parliament.

David Cain

David Cain

Biography

David Cain is deputy chair of The Manchester College's Governing Body.

David has extensive Board level experience and is an experienced former NHS Chief executive, working with the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads on a variety of initiatives involved with partnership working.

David also serves on the Board of The Corridor Manchester, a partnership organisation established by Manchester City Council, the Manchester Universities and Central Manchester Hospitals.
As Director of Central Manchester University Hospitals Charities, David led the charitable fundraising for the New Children’s Hospital Appeal, which hit its target of £20 million.

David is Chairman of the Manchester Health Academy in Wythenshawe. The NHS is lead sponsor of the Academy, which is co-sponsored by Manchester City Council and The Manchester College.

David serves on number of national Committees for the NHS and is a Trustee of the Pain Relief Foundation and a member of the NHS Olympic legacy group.
Previous roles have included positions of Chief executive of Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust, Greater Manchester Ambulance Service and The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Kate Macdonald

Kate Macdonald

Biography

Kate graduated from Manchester University in 1982 with a degree in English Language and Literature. She then undertook a sabbatical role in the Students’ Union before becoming a volunteer with the Probation Service.

In 1986, Kate returned to university to train as a Probation Officer and qualified with a CQSW in 1988. In 1989 she was awarded an MA (econ).
Kate’s career was in the Greater Manchester Probation Service for the next fifteen years where she held a variety of roles before becoming a District Manager responsible for Stockport and Trafford.

In 2003, Kate moved to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council as Head of Youth Offending Services. Here she was successful in achieving significant performance improvement before taking up the post of Head of Youth Offending in Manchester. Kate had lead roles in areas such as gun gang crime, safeguarding and reducing the use of custody.

Most recently, in May 2011, Kate moved to the voluntary sector where she is now Chief Executive of the Young People’s Support Foundation, a charity working with youth homelessness.

Sebastian Chowdhury

Sebastian Chowdhury (Student Governor)

Biography

Sebastian has been The Manchester College's Student Governor for the last two years.

His role is to represent students at the college and to work closely with the student council and governors to help The Manchester College progress.

Sebastian's role is demanding and involves conference delegation, College-wide, campus and governors' meetings, and writing report(s).

Sebastian says: 'I very much enjoy the role and hope to represent your views in the near future.'

Fiona King

Biography

Fiona has extensive experience as a professionally qualified senior marketing manager in business development across all channels, both in the business to business and business to consumer sector. She has held positions in charities, building societies and finance organisations.

Nick Collins

Nick Collins

Biography

Nick Collins is the chair of the Audit Committee.

Nick is a chartered engineer and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He is also a council member of the University of Salford where he leads on HR.

Nick is now retired and was formerly the managing director of ALSTOM T&D Distribution Switchgear, which was located in Higher Openshaw and which designed and manufactured high voltage switchgear for the electrical supply industry.

Nick began his career as a toolmaker after his apprenticeship with a large engineering company and attended various further education colleges to obtain the necessary technical qualifications to become a qualified engineer. He then became a manufacturing engineer with GEC where he developed his management skills to ultimately become the managing director of the same company, which had then become an ALSTOM T&D subsidiary. He then led a large industrial rationalisation of the ALSTOM T&D Distribution Switchgear Group to finally settle in Manchester.

Peter Fell

Peter Fell

Biography

Peter Fell has been the director of regional and economic affairs at the University of Manchester since 2000. He has responsibility for managing the university's complex civic and regional strategic relationships. Peter has a comprehensive understanding of the region's political and business environment, having worked at senior level for a number of public bodies including the North West Regional Assembly, Stockport Council and Merseyside Training and Enterprise Council (TEC).

Peter has expertise in civic and regional governance matters and sits on numerous regional and city regional boards and committees. He is a member of the CBI Regional Council and 4North West's Economic Development Committee. Peter has an interest in enterprise and skills issues. He has served as a school governor for over 15 years. He is also a former chair of Euro Info Centre North West.

Peter is passionate about the arts. He is chair of Arts About Manchester and Audiences North West, a board member of the Cornerhouse and a member of the council for Tate Liverpool. He is past regional chair of the RSA and a former member of the RSA council. Peter has a long standing interest in history and heritage issues. He has a master's degree from Kings College, University of Cambridge in history. He is vice chair of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (MOSI), a trustee of the Manchester Monastery and a trustee of the Manchester based Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation. He is a member of the Muslim Heritage Awareness Group.

Barry Lynch

Barry Lynch

Biography

Barry has now retired as Chairman and CEO of The Sutton Group after spending 38 years building up a group employing more than 800 people.

The group has moved away from its footwear manufacturing base and is now one of the country’s leading retailers under their ‘Wynsor’ banner, whilst their import companies supply most of the top UK stores.

After his retirement Barry retained the Chair of The Riverside Charitable Trust Ltd which is responsible for donations to local and national charities as well as being a major shareholder of The Group.

Until retirement, Barry was a Fellow of both The Chartered Institute of Secretaries and The Institute of Directors.

Barry is a Liveryman of The Worshipful Companies of Pattenmakers in The City of London and is also a Freeman of the City.

As well as being a Board Member of The Manchester College, Barry is also a Governor of Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School.

John Hacking

John Hacking

Biography

John is currently the senior European officer for North West Network, a regional charity supporting the third sector to access funds from Europe. John has extensive experience in the third sector; in particular in the areas of community regeneration, learning and skills, and employment creation. Prior to his current role, he was managing director of a social enterprise in Manchester providing workspace for small businesses.

John is also a member of the board of South Manchester Credit Union and is also a governor of Chorlton Church of England primary school. He has also been involved with the Chorlton Arts Festival for 10 years.

John is married with two daughters and a grand-daughter.

Adrian Mills

Adrian Mills

Biography

Adrian began his career at the BBC as a producer and director of children’s programming, including Play School, Record Breakers and The Really Wild Show. In 1991 he relocated to Toronto, Canada where he became Head of Children’s and Education programming for educational broadcaster TVO, then Head of Children’s, Youth and Daytime for CBC TV, Canada’s public service broadcaster. He then moved to adult programming and became Managing Director of CBC’s online service and Executive Director of Programming for CBC Radio.

Adrian returned to London in 2004 and became Chief Executive of LGT, a multimedia production company contracted by the UK Department for Education to create teaching and learning resources for gifted children. He returned to the BBC in 2009 and is Chief Adviser to the Director of Children’s and the Controller of Learning. Adrian sits on the BBC Children’s Board and leads on strategy and regulatory issues, as well as online safety and media literacy. Adrian actively promotes collaboration between BBC Children’s and BBC Learning and works as an Executive Producer for CBeebies and CBBC. He is now based at MediaCityUK in Salford Quays.

Adrian is an International Emmy Award winner and a voting member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). He is Deputy Chair of the World Summit Foundation on Media for Children and sits on the advisory board of the Learning Skills Foundation.

Khan Moghal

Khan Moghal

Biography

Khan Moghal (BSc (Eng) Hons, C Eng and MIGEM) is an engineer by profession. After working in the gas and computer industries for 25 years, he is the chief executive of Manchester Council for Community Relations, a position he has held for 15 years.

Khan works with many institutions and communities to promote community cohesion, including Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police. He helps to organise ADAM Day (bringing people of faith and non-faith together to celebrate common humanity), Abraham’s Table (now termed The Banquet) by bringing together students from higher education institutions to celebrate diversity in faith and to understand others’ beliefs.

He sits on the governing bodies of two Manchester schools. He is a member of the International Society (of Manchester universities and colleges) and chairs its General Council. He is also a board member of Greater Manchester Probation Trust, and a board member of South Manchester Law Centre. Nationally, Khan is a founding member of the UK Race and Europe Network (UKREN) and sits on its General Council.

Khan Moghal is a graduate of the University of Manchester, and holds a Diploma in Race and Community Relations from the University of Liverpool.

Eddie Sheehy

Eddie Sheehy

Biography

Eddie Sheehy is the lead tutor and coordinator of the management training programmes for The Manchester College's MOL division. He has worked in the college, mainly in MOL, since January 1989.

Eddie started work as a management trainee with Watney Mann and held several management positions before going to university to study human science. He qualified as a teacher in 1979 and has taught in schools in Leicester and Leeds. There followed an appointment at Boston College in Lincolnshire, where he was head of physical and health education as well as contributing to numerous other courses. He was part of the panel that wrote the retail certificate, the first NVQ.

Eddie holds a master's degree in education from the University of Nottingham, a diploma in outdoor education and a diploma in psychosynthesis counselling. He is a governor of three schools in Salford: Holy Cross Primary; All Hallows Business and Enterprise College; and Wentworth High School. He was a public governor of Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust until 2010 and did not seek re-election.

Eddie was a council member in Salford from 1992 to 2007 representing Eccles. He was a cabinet member for eight years and held three posts: arts and leisure, which included libraries and museums; human resources; and latterly community health and social care. He has been a member of the Well-being Board at the Local Government Association and worked with the Audit Commission.

Andrew Simpkin

Andrew Gordon Simpkin

Biography

Andrew is a solicitor and from 1973 to 2007 was a partner in Pannone LLP Solicitors in Manchester.

Andrew specialises in commercial property, tax and public sector issues. He served periods on the Board of Management, principally as finance director of the firm. He originated quality standards for the legal profession; and in particular Pannone was the first firm in the world to achieve ISO 9001.

From 2007 to March 2010 Andrew was a consultant to Pannone LLP.

Andrew is a non executive director of fashion internet retail company Boo Hoo. He was a founding trustee of the Louise Da Cocodia Trust.

He is currently a governor of Chethams School of Music and a board member of Arawak Walton Housing Association.

Andrew relaxes by indulging in, and teaching, scuba diving and also by winter climbing.

Peter Tavernor

Peter Tavernor

Biography

Peter Tavernor has been a college Principal for more than 13 years, and has been active in education and public service throughout his life. In his previous role as Principal of MANCAT he made it his mission to address poor local recruitment and poor educational outcomes in Manchester. As Principal of The Manchester College he has created a strong further education college with a financial surplus, exceptional buildings and impressive educational outcomes.

Under his leadership, The Manchester College has had a major impact on levels of participation in education in Manchester and delivered one of the highest value added scores nationally. His vision for the college is that it should work in local partnerships, particularly with high schools, to meet neighbourhood needs whilst at the same time providing excellent skills programmes on a regional and national basis.

Nationally, Peter has made an impact with his contribution to the 'not in employment, education or training' (NEET) agenda and through his highly influential role on the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) committee to implement educational maintenance allowances (EMAs). His views on the future of further education and its role in economic and social change are regularly sought by others.

Peter also chairs the Greater Manchester Principals Group and is an active member of the 157 Group of colleges and the Manchester Skills Board.

Peter Wharton

Peter Wharton

Biography

Peter was elected to the Governing Body in 2008 for a period of four years as a staff governor on behalf of the support staff in the college.

He has worked in the education and training sector in Manchester since 1972 and worked at MANCAT from 1991. He transferred to The Manchester College in August 2008 and is currently employed in the contract performance team dealing with apprenticeship issues.

Peter served as a councillor with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council from 1986 until 1999 and represented the Offerton and Great Moor wards. During this time, he was a member of most of the major committees of the council including the education, planning and housing committees. He was deputy mayor of Stockport Council in 1992 to 1993. He also chaired the governing body of a Stockport primary school for 13 years and was a governor of several other Stockport schools.

Peter was a staff governor on the previous MANCAT governing body and served on the personnel and curriculum quality committees.

In his spare time, Peter is a member of, and a season ticket holder at, the fan owned non-league FC United of Manchester. He attends all of their matches.
